Are Men and Women Really from Different Planets?

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By CarolAnn Bailey-Lloyd Are men really from Mars, and women from Venus?’what women want,’ is still left unanswered to men. Even when we reflect upon the 2000 film, What Women Want - lead character, Nick Marshall (played by Mel Gibson) seems to have all the answers. But does he really? Is it an inevitable fact that men and women are predestined not to clearly understand one another? I vividly recall a playtime conversation between my son and daughter when they were just preschoolers. In amusement, I watched as my son took his metal matchbox cars and drove them all over his roadmap carpet. ‘Vroom…vroom…’ he mumbled. And there beside him, sat my three-year old daughter, tightly clasping her little fingers around her own two cars. Adamantly, she waved them in front of her older brother’s face and attempted to make her cars have ‘dialogue’ with his cars. After a few moments of no response, (other than ‘vroom, vroom’), my daughter quickly became frustrated. She folded her arms and marched over to me, “…Mom, Ryan isn’t playing right,” she said matter-of-factly. Initially, I wanted to chuckle but I knew she was quite serious. I asked her, “…what do you mean - he is not playing right?” She blew out a huff and responded, “…I want his cars to talk to my cars and all he does is crash his cars into mine!” Peering over her head, I saw that my son was unnerved and oblivious to his sister’s obvious irritation. While she stood there with absolute disgust, he continued playing with his metal vehicles. It was at that point that I let out a little giggle, and I gave her a simple answer, “…sweetie, boys like to play and girls like to talk.” It may not have been the answer she was seeking, but this tiny event has shed some light to a wide-spectrum issue in two, very different sexes. Throughout life, I have personally learned that men are action-oriented, whereas women are interaction-oriented. And from personal experience, I have seen that many of these attributes are innate traits stemming back to prehistoric times where males were considered hunter/gatherers and females, considered nurturers. While human evolution has dramatically evolved with modern technology; longer, healthier life spans and overall improved communication skills - it seems that men and women still do not speak the same language. Inherently, men use interactions to fulfill essential purposes: entertainment, information communication, task completion, and other related needs. Women on the other hand, prefer to interact to deepen levels of relationships - to better understand their counterpart, or to bring about resolution through interaction. In other words, when men and women communicate, we hear the same dialogue, but we perceive and practice verbal communications very differently. As with the case of my own two children, my son was absolutely clueless to my daughter’s aggravation because he was preoccupied with his own actions. My daughter, however, was intent on interacting with him, and could not understand why he was ignoring her. This incident clearly demonstrates the concise perceptual differences between males and females. I have heard women tell me, `…he doesn’t understand me,’ or `…he’s not listening to me…’ And men, will rebuke, `…I don’t know what you’re talking about.’ It’s not that men don’t listen to women - it’s the fact that they are not hearing precisely what is being said; or perhaps they do not adequately comprehend the meaning behind the words. Additionally, because women are very interactive creatures, conversation may be invoked while men are actively engaged in a specific event, work or other project. When men are actively doing something, they are often so concentrated with their project that they simply do not hear a word. Women, however, may falsely perceive this inaction as disregarded communication. And then it’s back to square one - `…why is he ignoring me?” To find resolve in relationships, both men and women have to realize that while we all must communicate for progressive action, it is also essential to understand that women and men clearly think in different terms at different times. Before we jump the gun, and imagine the worst of our human counterparts, we must think about what was said, and in what manner it was said as well. Tone of voice plays a vital role in determining our various forms of communication and interaction with one another. If we do not practice, or we are not perceptive to tone of dialogue, as well as the words themselves, then it will obviously be mistaken for a complete different communication altogether. In addition, when individuals do not automatically respond or don’t hear others, it does not necessarily mean that the individual is being disrespectful or rejecting. Because we are only all too human, we have to accept that people make verbal and non-verbal mistakes that may or may not create tension in a relationship. If we begin to understand this is part of human nature, realize that we speak in different context, and comprehend that silence is not always a form of rejection, maybe then, both men and women will be able to reach each other on a positive level of interaction. 4/2005 Are Men and Women Really from Different Planets? Basic Principles of Christian Dating

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

By Keith Londrie It is often more complicated for a Christian dating than it is perceived to be. Dating is a natural desire in life. Christian dating is not as easy as following guidelines provided by faith. Some people find difficulty with their religious priorities when entering into a relationship with another person. You should not love anyone more than you love your God - and thus, adhering to religious dogma should be given priority over submitting to your partners wants. The wants of the flesh are strong and therefore your faith must be strong enough to keep God in your life. Christian dating excludes being sexual and casually dating around. Young Christians feel pressure from friends and school to date the way a non-Christian commonly would. Giving in to pressure can lead to bad decisions regarding what is believed to be right or wrong in ones faith. No Christian relationship can work unless both partners have equal moral standards and beliefs. If one partner believes differently than the other, the dating arrangement will not work or fit into the others’ faith. It is advised that a Christian should not pursue a relationship with a non-believer because of this. Sometimes a person can have difficulty keeping God as his main priority when there is another person in his life that he loves. Many Christians consider pre-marital sex to be a sin. As such, traditional Christian dating does not involve any sexual activity. Cuddling and kissing are acceptable forms of affection before marriage, but they should never be taken any further to remain in the path of God. An adult Christian dating struggles more with this than a younger person because sex is considered an adult activity. Sometimes a person will choose to remain single until they are older. Being single gives a Christian the chance to get acquainted and comfortable with their relationship with God before trying to date persons of the other sex. This is necessary for a true believer to accomplish before getting involved in another relationship. Being involved with someone is always going to be complicated. A Christian dating has to keep a strong relationship with God at the same time. It is a juggling act that few can pull off successfully without being right with God first. You should always put God first in your relationship in order to remain true to your faith. Keith Londrie II is a well known author. Develop a Marketing Plan That Works

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

By Mark Ferguson Does your company have a marketing plan and do you know where it is? If your marketing plan is sitting on a shelf, if you arent getting the new business results you want, or if you have a plan and dont know what to do with it read on. A well-developed marketing plan can help the good times roll in these not-so-good times. What a Marketing Plan Is A well-defined marketing plan is your companys road map to results. It will guide you from your current situation to your target destination. It should be a document that is used and revised as needed (no one says you have to live and die by what you decide to do today). You can develop an effective marketing plan by following a tried-and-true series of steps. What a Marketing Plan Is Not A marketing plan isnt some fancy, intelligently written (although it should be clearly communicated) 100-page document that wows people. It isnt a document that will take months to create, and isnt going to take the latest and greatest desktop publishing software to create. A marketing plan that works isnt something that only the marketing director or VP understands. Where are you now? Define who you are as a company. What is your companys business philosophy or approach to business? What are your companys competitive strengths and weaknesses? What differentiates you from your competitors? Knowing your key differentiators is integral to developing your marketing message. Use these guidelines to write several paragraphs that summarize where your business is now. Be sure to determine if this is how outsiders see your company. Ask a few vendors, customers or business referral sources to give objective feedback on your companys reputation. Its important to know if you think you are the tiger of your industry and your target market sees you as a sheep. Where do you want to go? What do you want to accomplish? (Increase new lines of business? Expand existing business? Both?) Do you have name recognition in your market? If not, do you want to build that? Do you know to whom you want to market? Do you want to target a new market? As Microsoft says, Where do you want to go today? A fun part of the marketing plan process is opening your mind to limitless possibilities. Working in your business instead of on your business works well for tunnel vision not marketing. Thinking about the future will get you back in touch with what you dreamed your company could be many years ago. Or, it may open up new dreams. As you proceed through this phase of plan development, outline your goals and be very specific. To hit a target, you need to know exactly what you are aiming at. Its nice to say you want to be the most well-known company in your city, but a more specific goal could be for you to be the most well-known company to your target market and increase sales by x percent in the coming year. And while you should dream big, its good to be realistic the best marketing plan in the world wont double new business in one year. Finally, once you have your goals on paper, its time to prioritize them. Put them in order starting with those with the greatest importance. Research, Research, Research Research may not be your cup o tea, but its critical to the success of your marketing plan. Once you have your targets on paper, you can focus your research to find out if another company is already the market leader in that arena, or test your company differentiation against other local offerings. You may decide that you would rather tackle another area in which competitors dont already have such a strong foothold. You also need to understand your target. What do they want? What do they value? A good place to start is American Demographics Magazine (www.americandemographics.com). The magazines Web site offers articles on various consumer and business market segments. Associations and publications catering to your target market can be useful, too. Web sites for those sources also are readily available. It never hurts to enlist the assistance of a pro. Often, the investment more than pays for itself in time savings. Profile your target market with the information you gather. Include the percentage of people in your town that would fall into your target market. What is your targets need for the services you offer? Do they appreciate the services you offer? Where do they currently go to buy these services? How easy/difficult will it be to lure them over to your company? The more specific your profiles are, the more they will help you hit your target. Hitting Your Target This is the most important part of your marketing plan! For each goal, you need to develop a strategy that incorporates your key messages and outlines the tactics you need to accomplish to reach your goal. There are many tools for you to use to convey your message, including: Newspaper TV Magazines Direct Marketing Campaigns Newsletters Public Relations events, speaking engagements, sponsorships Business Alliances For each goal, write your strategy with the key message and the tactics you will take to realize your goal. Heres a sample: Strategy: Position Bobs Widget Company as the unique provider of low-priced, high-quality widgets in Any City, USA. Key Messages: Bobs Widget Company offers low-priced, high-quality widgets and is committed to serving the citizens of Any City, USA. Tactics: Propose a story to the local business journal that shows how Any City, USAs citizens now have access to the most affordable widgets in America. Attend trade shows where you can meet retailers who serve your target market. If Bob wanted to take his widgets straight to his target market, he also might consider developing a direct mail campaign. As you outline each goal, make sure you keep asking yourself, Why should I do this? Also, be realistic. If you dont have a lot of money to pour into marketing, it doesnt make sense to list tactics that require a large budget. Marketing doesnt have to cost a lot of money if you are willing to invest time and creativity to achieve your objectives. Once you have all your goals broken down into smaller sub-goals, set a deadline for each sub-goal and a timeline for the larger goal. You want your marketing plan to be a win for you set practical time deadlines. Lets GO! Guess what? Thats it! You now have your marketing map, a well-developed to do list that was researched and is highly focused to get the results you want. It is based on facts, not hunches, and it will take you from point A to point B. More than that, it will continue to move you closer to meeting your company goals. As you complete each goal/sub-goal, be sure to document the results you realized. Use this analysis to tweak and improve your marketing process. We think you will be amazed at what you can do in just three months if you take your marketing effort one goal at a time. Evaluate Your Home Improvement Financing Options

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=R_Welch]R Welch Although as the saying goes,”There is definitely no place like home!”, the time will come that your home could use some renovations, upgrades or improvements. Does your kitchen need more cabinets? Do you need more space in the living room? How long have you had the crack in the bathroom tile floor? When was the last time you had your roof repaired or replaced? If any of these situations give you reason to pause, it could be time for some home improvements. If money is a concern, you should first evaluate your home improvement financing options. A home improvement loan can help finance the project or projects of your choice without paying for the whole project in one large chunk. The terms of a home improvement loan vary with each lender and also with the credit score of the borrower. Home improvement financing can be broken down into monthly or quarterly payments just like other types of loans. These loans can be extended for 5 to 10 years, but bear in mind that the longer the repayment period is, the higher the interest rate is likely to be. Why should you bother to evaluate your home improvement financing options if you can make the repairs yourself? There are some home improvements that should not be done by non-professional persons and having your home improvement financed can ensure that trained professionals can be hired and enough money exists to get the job done properly. A home improvement project properly executed by trained professionals will greatly increase the value of your home. A word of caution for you, financing professional home improvement projects isn’t cheap. There is, however, a value to financing your home improvements in this manner. The plus side is that you have the opportunity to stay in a home you always dreamed of and you have the ability to pay off the loan on more flexible terms. As you begin to evaluate your home improvement financing options, look for home improvement financing interest rates that are lower than others on the market. Consider the value of your property, also called the equity. The more equity your have in your home the better your starting position. You can find home improvement financing in such places as your local bank, loan brokers, and society co-ops. There are requirements for home improvement financing you must meet. You should be prepared to answer all of the following questions. Most places will ask if you have financial issues. Do you have existing credit loans from other companies? What is the status of those existing credit loans? What is the current status of your house mortgage? Do you have a regular income? Every company has its own rules and regulations. Those are just a few areas to consider begin the application process. The more preparation you can do beforehand, the better off you will be during the loan application and approval period. Taking the time to evaluate your home improvement financing options can eliminate a lot of confusion. Do as much comparison shopping as possible and pick the lender that offers an affordable loan rate and legal credibility. The History Of Paper Money

Monday, February 25th, 2008

By Andrew Routledge Its funny to think just how many people use paper money yet do not really know how the whole concept of paper money started. Paper money was non existent in the ancient world. Money was mostly coins made from gold or silver or other metals and the more you had, the richer you were. In order to understand the concept behind paper money, we must look at pre-modern history. The story of paper money started in eleventh century England. In those times, noblemen were rich and yet they were never satisfied with the amount they had. Besides having lavish life styles demands were placed upon all nobles by the king to pay royal taxes. In the days of the crusades these demands were almost unbearable. The crusades were crippling the economy. Something had to be done to produce more money, money was power and without it, if you were a nobleman, you were nothing. One way for nobles to raise money was to levy taxes on the inhabitants of their lands. This was a limited source of income because even if they were taxed to the maximum physically possible there was still only so much to be had. The other way to acquire more treasure was to wage war on your neighbours, kill them and do of with their treasure. It wasnt hard to find ligitate reasons for war in those days. Offense could be taken and honor defiled for reasons for which we would hardly even bat an eyelid at nowadays. Noblemen began to look for ways of stopping others from doing away with their own hard plundered money. Jews were now coming to live in England. Noblemen knew that Jews had experience in working with and guarding precious metals. The Jew was in a precarious position, he had no citizenship and few rights. By giving the Jew great responsibility he was committed to absolute loyalty. To this end a number of specially guarded secret stongholds were set up in which to hold the funds and treasure of all the noblemen who cared to entrust it to the protective care of the Jews. Nobody dare attact these strongholds because to do so would be classed as absolute treason and the penalty for such treachery would result in the most terrible death imaginable. For each pounds weight of gold that a noble had in the vaults, they were issued with a paper certificate that promised to pay the bearer of that certificate the weight of one pound in gold. Thus, the nobles could extract only as much gold as they intended to use, keeping the rest safe. As time past these Jewish trustees realized that gold was not being reclaimed to the extent that they had originally expected. What they saw was that the bearers of the certificates were exchanging them for goods or services which they would have otherwise bought with gold or silver coins. A new method of payment was emerging. This meant that if the gold was not being withdrawn, odds could be calculated on what the chances were that everybody would come to claim their gold at the same time. These odds varied from period to period according to various political and demographic factors and conditions but on the whole it was calculated that the odds that all gold would be reclaimed at any one specific time were about eighteen to one. Gold and silver bullion was now becoming security for a new financial structure. It was now possible to print more certificates that could be given on loan under the agreement that a certain level of interest would be added to the total sum to be paid back. To the nobles and the monarchy, this was a huge benefit, it was now possible for them to think in business terms instead of being just feudal rulers. Nobles could set up businesses with borrowed funds within their dominions and appoint people to run these businesses for them. These new businesses ranged from farms to mills to breweries and a great many other businesses. Noblemen could now pay royal taxes from their earnings and not only through the levy of heavy taxes on constituents and waging war on other noblemen. A new order had come about in the nobility. Could it have been that this was the real reason for the writing of the Magna Carta? After all, in those days, such advancement was a good as a new world order. The Jews who managed these systems, in time spread to many other countries and set up similar frameworks in those places. Nations protected these people with all their might. They became the very foundation of the wealth of nations. This special class of people became untouchables. In time, those Jews who were entrusted with the wealth of nations (and indeed sill are), became the most powerful people in the world. They had the power to open and close the taps that feed economies. Institutions were set up to deal with the withdrawal of funds so that there would be no need to deal directly with the holders of the bullion. In this way the families responsible for holding the nations wealth were able fade into a world of secrecy and virtual anonymity. These institutions are, of course, banks. Nowadays, not all the families in the business of printing money and holding bullion are Jews. Others, by inter marrying with the Jews or by duplicating the system elsewhere have become established in the money printing business. This, dear reader, is the true story behind the history of paper money. Thought! Could this be the real reason behind modern anti-semitism? Could it be that some of those self same people who needed the help of the Jews so urgently in those troubled times resented the power that they inevitably had no option other than to hand over to their Jewish trustees? Antisemitism has been rife throughout the cultured world throughout history but remember that the families who control the power of money have remained immune to this and rightly so. The rage of antisemitism has always fallen on Jews who are lower down on the socio-economic ladder, Jews who are mearly trying to live their lives in peace and who have done nothing to deserve this hatred. Rulers of countries of land who have traditionally kept their citizens in a state of abject squaller and poverty have systematically pointed their finger at the Jew who saved their skin by guarding their treasuries. What they hated was the fact that the Jew was the only one who could get him out of the utter state of futility that was his medieval reality. Thus, these unscrupulous noblemen vented their frustration against their Jewish financiers by instilling hatred in the primitive minds of their subjects. The reason being that this distraction diverted the blame from them as the real cause of the hardship and misery. In our modern times the need to print money is so great that there is only a very small fraction of the total worth of all the money in circulation that has physical gold or silver security behind it. Mostly, it is accepted to take security in the form of paper. Hello, I’m Andy Routledge. Plastic Garment Bags

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

By Marcus Peterson Plastic garment bags are basically large bags which are used to store different types of garments and clothes. These are more often than not used in places such as laundries and dry cleaning stores for packing suits, gowns, dresses and other clothing. They are also used in many garment stores for packing clothes when they are being sold to a customer or delivered to his house. These plastic garment bags are very popular all over the world. The plastic garment bags have many advantages. They help to keep the folds of the garment intact as well as keeps them wrinkle free. At the same time, they make sure that the clothes do not get dirty, spoiled or harmed by dirt or grime. They also show the garments fully, depending on whether the bag is clear or colored. This particular feature proves to be very useful to garment stores, laundries and dry cleaning shops as they display the clothes while keeping them from getting harmed. The plastic garment bags are by and large available in large rolls, from which the individual plastic garment bags can be torn off as and when they are required. These rolls can vary depending on how many bags there are in a roll. The minimum bags in a roll are generally one hundred and the numbers of bags in a roll can go up to thousand or even more. Usually it is seen that as the number of bags per roll increases, the price of the roll also increases. This however, depends on the brand and the company from which the customers are buying the rolls. The thickness of the roll also varies, depending on whether the garment bags are intended for suits, dresses or gowns. When buying in bulk, the price per roll may come down depending on the number of rolls bought. Plastic Bags provides detailed information on Clear Plastic Bags, Custom Plastic Bags, Plastic Bag Manufacturers, Plastic Bags and more. Plastic Bags is affiliated with Plastic Containers. Personal Injury Claim - Win Without A Doubt!

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

By Mumtaz Shah Everyone likes winning! If you win by an inch or a mile, winning is winning! Now winning at personal injury is a different ball game altogether. Do you want to claim compensation in direct result of an accident or injury? Okay, that’s fine go ahead, you deserve it! Life Before A Personal Injury Claim I bet it was awesome… You were having the time of your life. Winning at everything, football, cricket, racing, baseball and even at work. Met targets, been promoted and of the likes. You were at the top of Mount Everest, going crazy like Rocky at the top of the stadium. You’ve heard about accident injury claims and injury compensation claims meaning all the same thing. But never had the pleasure of feeling it and you DON’T want to. You think it can’t be that bad except when you get involved in a car accident. Those I believe are painful! Anyway reaching the pinnacle of success couldn’t get any better. Then one day an accident injury occurs… to YOU! Your life falls apart. You can’t win a single thing! Not even a date. You become a goof in the eyes of other people. You use to go out every Friday night. But now thanks to the accident injury, your bed is the only Friday night entertainment… well for the time being. Life During An Injury Or Injury Claim You feel like crap. PERIOD! You were the first person everyone called when there was something going on everyday. You were like an operator, call after call after call. You had to specifically buy a phone that had a battery life for enough talk time in a whole day. Now you don’t even charge it for days and still your battery’s full! The Picture There’s nothing much you can do, beside catch up on films you kept thinking you’d get round to one day. Now you can watch movies all day or keep up to date with the news. What’s happening around the world? Before you hear about an accident and think how awful. But now you have absolute sincere remorse for those people in such situations. Just like Hurricane Katrina. How terrible is that? The Feeling You feel for other people, their losses, regardless how large or small. Considering the best you can do is watch TV, soap after soap, movies after movie. There’s one thing you should never watch are the music channels! These are happy, joyful 5 minute clips of people dancing, clapping, rocking their body and of the likes. If after a couple of clips your favourite tune comes on. You wanna move. You’ll remember how it felt to be in such a happy position, singing and dancing. You forget about your injury and move… ‘OUCH!’ You remember you’re injured and feel like crap again. Then you’ll start wishing you weren’t in that position and how the hell did you even get in that position in the first place. Just the thought of not moving let alone winning the games makes you think about your life in a different perspective. The Move After days of thoughts, it’s time to do something about it. Get the best medication possible for pain relief, get a physiotherapy arranged, anything that gets you out of bed. Anything to be part of the real world again. But what about the time lost? How are you going to get that back as once it’s gone it’s gone. You can’t recover that, practically impossible! The Injury Claim Make an accident claim or an injury claim, both giving the same result. Choose the best no win no fee solicitor around and go for it. Then pour your feelings out! Sounds crazy even stupid for some people to mention their emotions to an accident solicitor let alone a stranger. It tends to be more difficult for men than women. A compensation solicitor knows how you feel, they see many of the likes day in day out. However, if you don’t mention your feelings including your injury then they can’t make the ‘ultimate winning personal injury claim’. The Settlement Compensation settlements cheques are based on various factors. It’s not just your physical ability that’s affected, so are your feelings. For example if you were the best center forward in your neighbourhood, everyone wants you on their team. You can’t play for anyone and after a while they don’t want you on their team. How would you feel? Hundreds of professional players around the world have to give up their careers cause of an accident injury. They also have to choose a different profession. It kills them psychologically! So what helps them to forget and move on? A compensation claim! Not exactly getting them back in the profession, but does compensate them to carry on with their lives. Think about it? It’s easy to win a personal injury claim and gain maximum results without the hassle, costs and confusion. Should You Go on a Dating Hiatus?

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

By Barbara Wright Abernathy Sometimes we need a hiatus from dating. A hiatus is a break in something that normally has continuity. You may have heard this term used in conjunction with television shows: The show is going on hiatus until shooting starts for next season. That means the actors and crew are taking a break until work starts again. The Brick Wall So how do you know it’s time to consider a dating hiatus? It’s when youve been dating for many months or years and still seem no closer to meeting the right person than when you started. It’s when you’ve been dating a succession of people but nothing of substance develops with any of them. Are you beginning to feel like youre just beating your head against a brick wall? It will feel better if you simply decide to STOP. Youve gotten yourself in a rut. You keep doing the same things to meet new people but every relationship just peters out and goes nowhere. Youre starting to feel so frustrated thats its affecting your relationships with family and friends. Youre just grumpy and negative much of the time. Youre losing hope of ever finding someone to love and becoming cynical and sarcastic about your future. Instead of moving forward youre going into a tailspin. Before you let this state of mind deteriorate into a full-blown depression, there is something you can do to change it: go on hiatus! If youre on a losing streak and it keeps getting worse instead of better, then do what any smart coach does for a player in that situation. Take yourself out of the game for a while. Break the Pattern When what you have been doing just isnt working, its time to stop, break the pattern and do something different. If you are sliding into a state of misery and frustration, this may be the time when you are unhappy enough to consider doing some personal growth and spiritual work. Sad but true, most of us do not take steps to change until the pain of changing is less than the pain of staying the same. This is the time when you are most motivated to find a connection to God or Spirit or Higher Power or whatever you call the unseen force that created our world. This is the time when you are most open to learning a new way to think and a new set of principles to believe in and live by that will take you out of your misery and put you back in charge of your life. If this is where you are today, dont beat yourself up because you havent found the love relationship you so ardently desire. Even the best boxer in the world sometimes has to go down for the count before he can get back up and start fighting again. Give yourself a break and take a break from the dating scene. Going On Hiatus Once you make up your mind firmly and decide you are going on a dating hiatus, you will immediately start to feel a little better. Thats because you have taken control of your life again and have stopped looking for someone else to make you feel okay. Next time some well-meaning friend asks you who youre dating you dont have to feel like a loser or a second-class citizen because youre alone. You can just say, Oh, Im on hiatus right now. Ive decided not to date for a while. Its a choice you have made, not an unwanted situation you found yourself in. You are in control and youre feeling better! Nows the time to take that class youve been meaning to take, start going to church, find a therapist or counselor or support group. Read a book or two about spiritual principles, study the bible or other scriptures that interest you. Go back to your religious roots or explore some different philosophy that intrigues you. Try a yoga or meditation or dance class. Take the hours and hours you used to spend online at the dating sites and invest them into yourself instead. Before I met my husband I took a two year dating hiatus and did just what Im suggesting you do. Thats why I know it works. What a relief it was to get myself out of the mindset of most singles: looking, looking, always looking. I pulled in my singles antenna that was always on the lookout for any man that might be a possibility. I stopped making decisions about whether to go to any event based on how many single men might be there. I accepted my state of singleness and enjoyed all the good things about it. Making Changes I delved into the universal spiritual principles taught in Religious Science and Unity churches and discovered that I actually had the power to change how I think and what I believe. I created a whole new life for myself and learned how to be happy and whole as a single person. I let the old feelings of not good enough drop away and replaced them with believing and knowing that my happiness did not depend on having a partner. Also, I came to realize that holding on to resentments from the past can block you from attracting good things into your life today. Learning to release bitterness and resentment is a necessary step, but one that many people are unwilling to take. If you are having difficulty finding and keeping a good partner today, chances are theres some anger over a past hurt buried in you thats part of the cause. You dont have to forgive and pretend that whatever they did wasnt wrong, but unless you release those angry feelings, and stop giving them your attention, youll never be free of their influence. Doing this emotional work may not be much fun and you may resent the fact that you even have to do it! But if you have the courage you can find a way and it will make a tremendous difference in your next relationship. I can vouch for that. When I was secure in the knowledge that I am enough and dont need anyone else to be happy then I was able to go back into dating and attract a great mate in less than a year. Turns out that the solution to the problem was within myself. Once I released my old resentments and learned to appreciate all the good things about my life, I attracted some really good men into my life. Now I’m happily married a man who is a perfect partner for me. This dating hiatus idea may seem too radical and extreme to you right now. However, the more people you date and the more unhappy you get, the more it will start to make sense to you. If all you do is take a break for a while, but dont do anything to make needed changes within yourself during that time, then you cant expect to get better results when you start dating again. A dating hiatus works only if you work it! How Long? How long should it take? There are no hard and fast rules about this. It all depends on how much change and growth you need before you are able to produce a different outcome for yourself. My guess would be a minimum of six months to an average of several years. Does this sound impossible for you right now? If you cant stand the thought of not having a date for six months, then you are in a precarious state of mind, depending way too much on being in a relationship to make you feel okay. A dating hiatus could be just what you need, but you may not be ready to accept that yet. It requires patience and the determination to stick with it for however long it takes. In our culture of instant gratification and the quick-fix, people dont like hearing this, but it is the truth. Let these ideas sink in and roll around in your subconscious for a while. Few people will joyfully jump up after reading this and shout, Yes, Im going on a dating hiatus tomorrow! Give it some time and when the time is right for you (or when you are sufficiently miserable and frustrated), you will know. When its done with the right motivation, a dating hiatus along with some personal growth work can be your ticket to a better future. You’ll go back into the dating game with a real possibility of winning next time. Word Study: Yom

Friday, February 15th, 2008

By Greg Neyman The Hebrew word for day is the word Yom. Young earth creationists have always argued that the word used for the days of creation can only mean a 24-hour day. In this article, we will examine the uses of Yom in the Old Testament, and show that it can mean a wide variety of time periods. First, one must understand that the Hebrew language is not nearly is diverse as our English language. Whereas we have millions of words, the Hebrew source for the Old Testament only consists of slightly less than 8,700 words…and many of these could be considered duplicates with only slight differences. Thus, words which contain multiple meanings are common. Such is the case with the word Yom. Hebrew Dictionaries Lets start with the possible meanings of Yom; The Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament (1980, Moody Press) “It can denote: 1. the period of light (as contrasted with the period of darkness), 2. the period of twenty-four hours, 3. a general vague “time,” 4. a point of time, 5. a year (in the plural; I Sam 27:7; Ex 13:10, etc.).” Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible (symbols omitted) from an unused root meaning to be hot; a day (as the warm hours), whether literal (from sunrise to sunset, or from one sunset to the next), or figuratively (a space of time defined by an associated term), [often used adv.]:–age, + always, + chronicles, continually (-ance), daily, ([birth-], each, to) day, (now a, two) days (agone), + elder, end, evening, (for)ever(lasting), ever(more), full, life, as long as (…live), even now, old, outlived, perpetually, presently, remaineth, required, season, since, space, then, (process of) time, as at other times, in trouble, weather (as) when, (a, the, within a) while (that), whole (age), (full) year (-ly), younger As you can see, Hebrew dictionaries attest to the fact that the word Yom is used for anywhere from 12 hours up to a year, and even a vague “time period” of unspecified length. Other Uses of Yom Day is not the only translation for the word Yom. Here are some other uses. Time It is interesting to note that in 67 verses in the Old Testament, the word Yom is translated into the English word “time.” For instance, in Genesis 4:3, it says “And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord.” In this instance, Yom refers to a growing season, probably several months. Again, in Deuteronomy 10:10, it refers to a “time” equal to forty days. In I Kings 11:42, it says “And the time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years.” In this case, Yom translated as the word “time” is equivalent to a 40 year period. In Isaiah 30:8, it says “Now go, write it before them in a table, and note it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever.” In this case, Yom is equal to “forever.” How long is forever? An infinite number of years…billions upon billions upon billons of years. If Yom can equal trillions of years here, then why not billions of years in Genesis? Year Four times in the Old Testament Yom is translated “year.” In I Kings 1:1, “David was old and stricken in years…” In 2 Chronicles 21:19, “after the end of two years” and in the very next verse “Thirty and two years old.” Finally, in Amos 4:4, “…and your tithes after three years.” In each case, Yom represents years, not days. Age Eight times in the Old Testament Yom is translated “age.” These range from sentences like “stricken in age,” meaning old age (Genesis 18:11 and 24:1; Joshua 23:1 and 23:2), and other times it says “old age” (Genesis 21:2, Genesis 21:7). Genesis 47:28 refers to “the whole age of Jacob,” therefore yom here refers to an entire lifetime. In Zechariah 8:4, it says old men and women will sit in the streets of Jerusalem, “each with cane in hand because of his age.” Ago One time Yom is translated “ago.” 1 Samuel 9:20 says “As for the donkeys you lost three days ago, …” Always Four times yom is translated as “always,” in Deuteronomy 5:29, 6:24, 14:23, and in 2 Chronicles 18:7. Always here can be interpreted as a lifetime…for instance, we are to keep the commandments of the Lord always (Deut. 5:29). Season Three times yom is translated “season.” In Genesis 40:4, “…and they continued a season in ward.” Again, in Joshua 24:7, “dwelt in the wilderness a long season,” and in 2 Chronicles 15:3, “…a long season Israel hath been…”. In each case yom represents a multi-month period. Chronicles When used in conjunction with the word dbr, yom is translated “chronicles” (27 times). Continually When used in conjunction with kwl, yom is translated as “continually” (11 times). Once, in Psalm 139:16, it is translated continuance (without the kwl). Ever Ever is used to represent a long period of time, such as in Deuteronomy 19:9, “to walk ever in his ways.” Nineteen times Yom is translated “ever.” The old testament uses “for ever” instead of the word forever. In sixteen cases of use of the word ever, for is placed before it, indicating a infinite period of time. I will not list them all (consult Strong’s Concordance for a full listing) but here is an example. In Psalm 23:6, it says “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.” Here Yom is translated as the final word of this verse, ever. Thus, Yom in this verse, and 16 others, represents eternity. Evermore In one instance, when yom is used in conjunction with kwl, Yom is translated “evermore.” Deuteronomy 28:29, “…and thou shalt be only oppressed and spoiled evermore;” thus representing either a lifetime or eternity. Word Usage in the Old Testament As you can see, Yom is used in a wide variety of situations related to the concept of time. Yom is not just for days…it is for time in general. How it is translated depends on the context of its use with other words. Yom in the Creation Account Even within the creation account, Yom is used to represent four different time periods. Genesis 1:5 “And God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night.” Here, Moses uses Yom to indicate a 12-hour period Genesis 1:14 “And God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night, and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years.” Here, Moses uses Yom to indicate 24-hour days Genesis 2:4 “…in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.” Here, Moses uses Yom to indicate the entire creative week. The fourth usage of Yom in the creation account is in the summary for each of the six creation days, “and there was morning and evening the first day”. Yom is used to represent a finite, long period of time, usually either millions or billions of years. To show support for this, consider the uses of Yom by Moses. Moses Other Uses of Yom Moses, the author of the first five books of the Bible, and of Psalm 90, used Yom in many different ways. Genesis 4:3 “And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord.” In this instance, Yom refers to a growing season, probably several months. Genesis 43:9 “…then let me bear the blame for ever.” Here, Moses uses Yom to represent eternity Genesis 44:32 “…then I shall bear the blame to my father for ever.” Again, Moses uses Yom to represent eternity Deuteronomy 4:40 “…that thou mayest prolong thy days upon the earth, which the Lord thy God giveth the, for ever.” Here Yom represents a physical lifetime Deuteronomy 10:10, “Now I stayed on the mountain forty days and nights, as I did the first time,…” Here, Yom is a “time” equal to forty days. Deuteronomy 18:5 “…to stand to minister in the name of the Lord, him and his sons for ever.” Again, Yom is translated as eternity Deuteronomy 19:9 “…to love the Lord thy God, and to walk ever in His ways…” Here, Yom represents a lifetime. As long as we live we are to walk in his ways As you can see, Moses used the word Yom to represent 12-hours, 24 hours, the creative week, forty days, several months, a lifetime, and eternity. Common Young Earth Arguments To get around the obvious conclusion that Yom in Genesis 1 can mean millions of years, young earth theorists have come up with several arguments, none of which is supported by common Hebrew grammatical rules according to Hebrew experts (such as Dr. Walter Kaiser). These rules were created by Hebrew language experts who are young earth creationists to begin with, thus their viewpoint is obviously biased. They have a specific agenda they are trying to prove, and thus cannot be objective. Ordinals/Cardinals Young earth creationists say that whenever Yom is used with an ordinal or cardinal number (1st, 2nd, 1,2, etc) that it always represents a 24 hour day. However, this is not true. In Zechariah 14:7-9, the “one day” refers to a period of time when the Lord shall be king over the earth. In other places, some say that Isaiah and Hosea have numbers with the word day which are figurative. Some young earth theorists, including Jonathan Sarfati in his book Refuting Compromise, have addressed this verse in Zechariah an Hosea. Although his argument sounds impressive, you have to recognize it for what it is…he is arguing for his young earth agenda, thus any rules that he espouses must be examined by true Hebrew scholars who are impartial. Hebrew scholars do not recognize this fabricated rule.1 What Sarfati thinks is not important…what is important, as Dr. Walter Kaiser points out, is the intentions of the author. We should not create rules that support our own agendas, but should strive to understand the author’s intended meaning outside of rules. Evening/Morning Construction In Genesis 1 Moses says “and there was evening and morning the xx day”. Does the use of evening and morning indicate a sunrise and sunset for each creative day? First, let’s look at what evening and morning are not. They are not actual evening and mornings, as this requires a sunrise and sunset. According to young earth theory, the Sun was not created until Day Four, thus there could be no sunrise or sunset for the first three days of creation. However, God uses the terms evening and morning for those first three days. Therefore, they cannot be actual evenings and mornings. We are left with only one option. The words for Evening and Morning can only represent the beginning and ending of the creative period, and not actual sunrise and sunsets. Scripture itself sets this pattern for us. Morning and evening are used figuratively in Psalm 30:5, Psalm 49:14,15, Psalm 90:6. Thus, the evening and morning of creation can mean the start and end of the creative process that is attributed to that creation period. Young earth advocates counter that traditionally, church fathers have always held that sunrise and sunsets do not constitute a day, and they accepted the sun creation on Day Four with no hint of the first three days being anything other than 24-hour days. For instance, Sarfati in Refuting Compromise mentions Luther and Calvin (page 84-86). However, Luther and Calvin did not have the means of modern science at their disposal. At the time, geocentricity was still accepted! Don’t fall into the trap of following the teachings of our church fathers. Literal/Figurative Argument This argument says that you cannot use a word figuratively until after you have used it literally. The author gives two examples, which appear to be correct and follow this rule. However, is this rule valid? I see no reason to suppose that it is. You have to be careful with young earth claims about biblical interpretation methods. Again, they will invent rules that support their cause, when there is no basis for their rule in Hebrew. In this case, it makes no difference which order the word Yom appears in, i.e. literal before figurative or vice versa. Yes, these are the first words of the Bible, but they are not the first words of mankind. All the time from Adam to Moses, men were speaking in their own languages, thus the literal interpretation via spoken language would already have been established. There was no need to suppose a literal/figurative structure. If God’s Creation Was Billions of Years Old… If God’s creation was billions of years old, how would He have written the creation account in Genesis? One thing is certain…God is good at telling us exactly what we need to know. When God refers to a large number, He uses picture stories, such as Abraham’s descendants being as numerous as the sand. Why does He do this? If God had said, “You will have millions of descendants,” Abraham would have asked, “What is a million?” When considering the creation, if we broke it down into days, that would be 5,000,500,000,000 days, or roughly 13.7 billion years. Do we need an account for each day of creation…of course not. God in His infinite wisdom, saw fit to tell us the creation story by breaking it down into creative segments, each of which was attributed to a specific creative act or acts. We need to give the early Hebrews of Genesis a break…they didn’t have calculators like we do! One must also consider that time with God has no meaning. To Him, 10 billion years is like a day. Thus, it is no problem for God to put billions of years into one of His days. Dr. Hugh Ross puts it best in his determination that the frame of reference for creation is the surface of the earth. Genesis 1:2 puts the witness of creation on the surface. But who is witnessing these events? It is God himself. During the first 5.99 days of creation, God is the only one present. Thus, human time does not matter…no humans were there to witness the passage of time. What matters is how God sees time! Thus, a billion year day is only a passing moment in God’s eyes. The creation account is written in such a manner for all people to understand it. The issue is not how long creation took…the issue is that God did it, and that’s all that matters in the end. Conclusion With such a wide usage of the word Yom for many different time periods, it cannot be claimed that Yom in the Old Testament only represents a 24-hour period. During the creation account alone, Yom represents four different time periods. Rules of Hebrew, created by young earth Hebrew scholars, are invalid. Because of their biased position, they are trying to prove their own agenda. Since humans did not witness creation, our own concept of a 24-hour day does not apply. The only thing that matters is God’s concept of time. Thus, the only evidence we have to accurately assess the age of creation is the creation itself. Since the rocks and stars say we are billions of years old, that must be the truth. This fits perfectly with a literal interpretation of Genesis, and an inerrant Bible, and does not impact any other Biblical doctrines. 1 Television Show and Transcript, “Are the Genesis Creation Days 24 Hours or Long Periods of Time,” The John Ankerberg Show, 2005.
