How To Identify Your Own Depression

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

By Carolyn Magura Depression. What is it? Why would a normally healthy, optomistic person get depressed? If things go wrong, don’t you just talk yourself out of feeling sorry for yourself? So what if your 23 year marriage ends, and your soon-to-be ex-husband moves in with your best friend; you are left to cope with 2 devestated teenagers; you loose your father and father-in-law to cancer; you have extreme job challenges; and, your new condo, purchased without REALLY knowing what to look for (just don’t buy a home with a laundry room upstairs over the living room!) and you develop a roof leak, and a laundry leak into the living room. AND, you are the primary care giver for a very needy Mother. You can handle all of this, right? And, when, the next year, you loose your Mother and Grandmother to cancer too, it doesn’t send you over the edge, does it? Particularly when you also have Multiple Sclerosis, which has been misdiagnosed for over 35 years, and the worst thing for MS is stress and anxiety. You can handle everything, right? Well, I found that I couldn’t. Consider the following list of symptoms that one should review if you think that you might be suffering from depression. OR, if you, like me, are convinced that you CAN HANDLE IT, if the rain would just stop; or, if the roof would just stop leaking (I’ve already tried to get it fixed 2 times, and it hasn’t yet worked; I now have a gallon bucket sitting in the front hallway to catch the water leaking from the hole in the roof); or, if the kids would just stop being “normal” teenagers, when you no longer have a husband to help you in the day-to-day coping with teenagers. Here is a checklist of symptoms of depressive illness: 1) Loss of energy and interest. 2) Diminished ability to enjoy oneself. 3) Decreased — or increased — sleeping or appetite. 4) Difficulty in concentrating; indecisiveness; slowed or fuzzy thinking. 5) Exaggerated feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or anxiety. 6) Feelings of worthlessness. 7) Recurring thoughts about death and suicide. I remember clearly my “last straw”. I read the list, above, and was sure that these 7 symptoms did NOT describe me. Then, with all of my water problems at home, I went to work in my 4th (top) floor office that just happened to have a flat roof. While on the phone arguing with the roofer who claimed that my roof shouldn’t be leaking, and my telling him that it still was leaking, and if he didn’t believe me, he could just come over and see my bucket full of water in my entry way, when I heard the familiar “pitter-patt” noise that freaked me out at home. I looked up at my office ceiling just in time to see water beginning to gush out of the ceiling tiles, around the hanging lights, and pour into my office. That did it. I went home. That night, I awoke thinking that I heard the “pitter-patt” in the upstairs laundry room, dripping water into my living room. I got up, turned off the water to the washing machine; stuffed all of my towels around the washer, and stood with my back against the wall in my first ever anxiety attack, thinking that if this was what my life had become, why would I even want to continue living it? This event scared me into going to my Doctor. He had a great little “depression” test for me. Knowing my fragile state, he asked me the statements, and, based both on my answers and on the detailed symptom impairment document that I had started preparing for him, prescribed an antidepression medication for me. I learned two critical things that day - three, really. The first one is that it is critical to have a Doctor that you trust, that knows you, and that LISTENS to what you are saying. Secondly, since he knew about my MS, he told me that Depression was a frequent secondary symptom of MS. (At that time, I hadn’t done my MS symptom research yet; the Disabilitykey Workbook, found at www.disabilitykey.com is the ultimate result of all of my symptom and system - Long Term Disability and Social Security Disability Insurance - research for myself.) Third, I learned that no matter how strong your personality is, and no matter how positive a person you are, Depression is NOT something you can get over by just “thinking positive thoughts”; by “keeping a stiff upper lip”. If you truely think that you are suffering from Depression, there is nothing wrong from talking to your Doctor, and seeking his advice. All that I have discussed so far happened over a dozen years ago. I am still taking antidepression medication, and it does help. I have searched high and low for the original test that my Doctor used on me, and finally found one at one of my favorite resources, called the “Institute for Algorithmic Medicine” (that’s academic talk for medical condition tests). The test is “The Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale”. As you read the following questions, ask yourself where the statement ranks on the following scale: 1) A little of the time for me. 2) Some of the time for me. 3) A good part of the time for me. 4) Most of the time for me. I fell down-hearted and blue. Morning is when I feel the best. I have crying spells or feel like it. I have trouble sleeping at night. I eat as much as I used to. I still enjoy sex. I notice that I am losing weight. I have trouble with constipation. My heart beats faster than usual. I get tired for no reason. My mind is as clear as it used to be. I find it easy to do the things I used to. I am restless and can’t keep still. I feel hopeful about the future. I am more irritable than usual. I find it easy to make decisions. I feel that I am useful and needed. My life is pretty full. I feel that others would be better off if I were dead. I still enjoy the things I used to do. This little test, with your self rating for each statement, and with your symptom impairment documentation, so that your Doctor knows more about you and what is going on in your life, s/he can best decide what to do to help you better achieve a higher quality of life. Perhaps antidepression medication isn’t what you need, something else would be better for you. But, if you don’t learn, document, seek help, and discuss with your Doctor, s/he can’t help you help yourself. Many of you are probably asking yourselves how I can just put myself out there; just put into these bloggs what is going on in my life. I’m doing this, sharing these experiences so that you can know that I have been there; I’ve done that; I’ve got the t-shirts! Know Your Customer

Monday, August 27th, 2007

By Douglas Owen One of the biggest problem that ecommerce has is that they usually do not know their customer. Think about it for a second, you do not see the person like someone in the corner store does do you. You just hold out a catalogue of products in one hand and your other hand is waiting for money. So how do you know if your marketing money spent targeting the right group? You ask your buyers. Most ecommerce scripts that are worth anything will let you include a coupon code discount. Look for that. Post a little survey on your site and offer a discount to anyone who takes it. That way you will be able to gather important demographics concerning your actual customers. It does not have to be a big discount; people will do it just because they perceive a value. Take $2.00 off the shipping. They enter the code and BANG, there it goes. It makes it a good game when you find out your actual market for the $50 product marketed for teenage girls is actually what 50-year-old men buy. Like I always say, know your customer. Guerrilla Marketing: Don’t Forget the Postcard

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

By Ryan Powers With the litany of marketing options companies and individuals have at their disposal today, it is sometimes easy to fall into the trap that less is not more. Whether to compete with like-rivals or dismiss some less expensive strategies, many companies simply opt for costly media buys and expensive PR firms. Still others will commit something far worse nothing at all. The concept of Guerrilla Marketing (and other non-traditional methods) is really just a fancy way of saying that you can accomplish more with less. To borrow a military analogy, if buying TV, radio and prints ads constitutes the air campaign, then Guerilla Marketing would entail your Ground War. Rather than spread your message to a broad audience without certainty of mass interest, focus your message and your targets to those you know to be in your core market. One of the tactics you can utilize in your Ground War is the often-overlooked, but extremely cost-effective, postcard. There are countless printing options for consumers to buy postcards. By the time you get done standing in line at Kinkos or your local printer down the street, the online route allows you to already pick the right postcard, design the look and feel (or had someone help you), proof the artwork with a customer service representative, and request the postcards to be shipped to your doorstep. The combination of quality and speed is essential in a printing solution provider, especially when Guerrilla Marketing campaigns are on the line. Below are a few suggestions for creating effective guerrilla campaigns, in general, and achieving maximum effectiveness with a postcard, specifically: Invest more effort, not money With all of the avenues to achieve earned media for your business unique value proposition, free internet search engines and other websites, there is no reason to spend lavishly before you have a better understanding of the return on investment of a particular campaign. Consider the example of certain political campaigns: Candidates and staff spend a good amount of time (not money) sorting through lists of constituents and determining which will make the best targets for its message(s). Are they registered to vote? Likely to vote? Republican or Democrat? Male or Female. Over 50? Likely affected by a particular issue that you are talking about? This form of segmentation allows campaigns to have their messages resonate, rather than just spam the uninterested, or those not likely to be convinced by their message. Say something eye catching, but professional The key to Guerilla Marketing isnt just that you execute a low-cost/high-yield campaign. It also requires that you say something unique and memorable about your product or service. It is imperative to rise above the noise of emails, direct mail pieces, phone calls and other advertisements with a memorable message. In real estate, agents and organizations are always advertising to the particular geography they want to serve. While you may need to compete in-kind, consider that your message will not just have your name, contact information and a catchy slogan. It may also contain something more differentiating: a lower commission, a bundled service (such as mortgage lending, title insurance or home inspections), or a call-to-action. All of these components make it easier and more urgent for the target to contact you before they have a chance to be inundated with your competitors messages. Test and retest If you do not have a guaranteed return on investment, it is wise to try a sample-size large enough to give your campaign a fighting chance, and yet small enough that you can gauge the success or failure of that campaign (and adjust on the fly without exhausting your marketing budget). Once you have tweaked the campaign to optimize your message, targeted demographic and frequency of dissemination, you will be light years ahead of your competition (that just indiscriminately blasts spam). If you are a restaurant owner and your primary rival blasts out ad campaigns and mailers every week to prospective customers within a 20-mile radius, then your competitor would likely argue that they have the better marketing program. However, rather than focus on everyone initially, why not approach high rise complexes in the same geography first (office and residential) where you need to post far fewer fliers (and probably for free) to reach the entire audience at a much better economy of scale? You can then determine the success of that targeted campaign and how you need to adjust (language, approach, frequency) before spending anymore time or money. No matter the size of your marketing budget, you can compete, and often outsmart even the biggest rivals in your industry, by simply utilizing some of these ideas. Never assume because a rival has been doing it longer, or because they have more market share, that they have a monopoly on the best way to reach potential customers. The products and services of today can be, and usually are, replaced by the individuals (and their organizations) who realize that Fast can beat Slow, that Effort and Ideas can beat Money, and that those who challenge the status quo are not bound to pre-determined confines. 2007 SymAction Communications. Common Lawn Weeds and How to Control Them

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

By Alex Fir Constant vigilance is the best way to keep weeds under control. You should never allow the weed to flower or set seed. 1. Couch Grass This perennial weed is found in beds and borders. It is being spread by underground stems with small fibrous roots at every joint. It is hard to eliminate by cultivation; however, constant hoeing will exhaust the perennial root system. Remove by hand the moment you notice them. Use a fork in order to avoid cutting up the stems, because even a small part left in the soil will immediately create another plant. Frequent close mowing will kill off the majority of infestations in the first season. Spray with a systemic weed killer, such as one that contains glyphosate. 2. Creeping Buttercup This spreading perennial weed is very aggressive and can take over large areas. In the lawn it creates a rosette at soil level; for this reason, it is not affected by mowing. It spreads by runners that creep along and takes root at intervals, forming new plants. This weed is sensitive to all weed killers so it is easy to control it in the lawn. Spraying with one that contains 2,4-d, such as Verdone will eliminate this weed. 3. Daisy This weed can stand close mowing and still flower. It is spread by seed so can colonize the lawn quickly. They are fairly easy to eliminate because they are susceptible to weed killers and one application is typically enough to kill them. If infestations are sparse then weed them out using a hand fork known as a daisy grubber. 4. Dandelion - This perennial weed has large rosettes and bright yellow flower head. It can stand close mowing so hand weeding it typically is the best control method. However, the long tap root needs to be removed, as new plants will form from them. A long probe, two-pronged fork is specially made for the purpose of removing them. You can pour salt on to the centre of the weed; this will kill the weed overnight; then remove it by hand. Spraying with weed killer will also do the job. 5. Moss This is the most troublesome weed in the lawn. It is a tiny non-flowering plant. To permanently remove it, the basic principles of good lawn maintenance must be meticulously followed. Apply a moss killer in spring and autumn. Do not cut the grass too short; also, your grass should not be too long; reduce shade on the lawn. And most importantly, scarify and aerate the lawn in autumn. Search Engine Optimization Defined: Latest Fad or New Cash Cow?

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

By Daniel Orlando First, for the sake of clarity, and because I have heard many contrasting descriptions and definitions of SEO, allow me to explain what I mean when I refer to SEO and Search Engine Optimization. The simple definition provided by Wikipedia explains that “Search engine optimization (SEO) as a subset of search engine marketing seeks to improve the number and quality of visitors to a web site from “natural” (”organic” or “algorithmic”) search results.” The line between “Search Engine Optimization” and what is defined as “web-marketing” is becoming increasingly blurred, when they are in fact two different beasts. The SEO approach deals solely with gaining higher search engine rankings, while web marketing encompasses the whole package. At Vision, SEO is part of the site’s development plan, and most of the SEO is already done by the time the website is finished. The question is: why is web site design and SEO still being done as two separate phases of the project, many times by two entirely different companies. Web Marketing and SEO programs are generally continuous monthly programs that are strategic and are based on a significant amount of market research, competitive analysis, and consumer profiling. These programs, done right, can easily exceed the cost of your sites development in less than 90 days. Unfortunately, there are many companies offering SEO programs for as little as $149 a month, and revved-up website owners about the latest SEO buzzwords often go into it with high expectations and end up sadly disappointed. Best words of wisdom when it comes to web marketing and search engine optimization: be prepared and willing to make an investment if you want to receive a high return. Look at it this way, the higher the risk you take with your spending, the greater your income potential will be. The Solution: How-to Minimize Your Risk Presently, the combination of Web Marketing and SEO is very necessary to stay competitive in any industry. Website owners are very weary though about taking the dive into SEO, and in an attempt to minimize the risk by paying a company that says they can do SEO for $50 per month, they end up throwing their money away anyway. Does this sound familiar? Even if you are a developer, you probably know someone that has done this, or have at least seen one of these fallacy-ridden websites on the web. The key is to use a combination of the knowledge and information previously stated in this article, combined with what I’m about to tell you. You can significantly minimize your risk depending on WHO you are taking the risk with. In other words, the question is: are you confident that the company that you are trusting to leverage your money will be able to get you the expected- or a higher than expected- return on investment? Most importantly, no matter what, always do your homework on the company that you’re considering, and be very weary of independent contractors. A lot of unknowing consumers got burned when word first hit the streets of the instant millionaires that were emerging prior to the great dotcom bubble burst. Often times, these instant millionaires did a lot of their own SEO and web marketing, at least initially. A friend of mine who is a former pro bodybuilder, built a company yielding 6 to 8 million dollars a year gross revenue selling nutritional supplements online and doing his own web marketing on his average little Dell laptop sitting in his living room. He had no employees, and was warehousing all of the products right at his house. Needless to say, eventually he was drowning in powders, pills, and protein drinks so much so that he had to sell the company if he wanted it to continue to grow without hiring staff and getting a warehouse. He just wanted to sit in the comfort of his home and play on the internet all day driving tons of traffic through his website and money into his pocket. So he sold the company and kept 20% of it so he could still have a stake as it grew. He is one of the few web marketers that truly deserve the title of “Self-made Specialist.” So is it worth it? Absolutely. We’ve had clients increase sales by the millions within 6 months after launching a highly lucrative marketing and SEO campaign. However, they were willing to make a significant investment because they could see the value. To invest in such a campaign requires one to truly see the value in the product and an understanding an acceptance of the fact that they will most likely be in the red for the first 3-4 months. Because this is generally not the case with the average consumer, few take part in web marketing done the right way, the right way being that which turns nothing more than an idea into a multi-million dollar company in 12 months. You probably hear about this sort of thing all the time without even realizing it. There are many case studies and discussions of this recent phenomena all over the web, yet 99% of people state that they dont have the money and that it could never happen to me, when they read about such stories. Ill refer you to the book Multiple Streams of Income by Robert Allen for a further understanding of the web-marketing trend and what it could mean for your business. His 10th stream of income is web marketing, discussed by his personal web marketing advisor in the book. In many cases my suggestion to clients is to not worry about their web marketing strategy until your website is completed and published, but make sure that they’ve budgeted enough for it. With the popularity and potential of a good web marketing campaign, it seems as though the tail is often wagging the dog when new clients come to us. They’re more interested in the marketing and what they’re going to do after the fact, and they may not even have a product that people want to buy! The important thing is that you have budgeted something for your web marketing campaign. The amount to budget depends on how aggressive you want to be and how many hours you want spent on it. It also depends on what you might be able to learn and do yourself. Most people budget a minimum of $3000 for the first couple of months and at least $500 to $1000 per month thereafter for as long as they’re in business. It may seem like a lot at first, but the results are usually astonishing. It is important to note though, that anything else and youre probably just throwing your money away and any honest SEO expert that is not just trying to get your money will tell you that. In fact, most experts will probably say that the aforementioned amounts are on the low end. With that in mind, another thing must be addressed when it comes to Internet marketing. Many legitimate web-marketing firms get a bad name because they are unable to effectively set expectations at the beginning of a project. We are honest with our clients and let them know that it is ok to have high expectations with what they can expect to generate in terms of income, however they will need to be prepared to make an investment and trust in our work, even if months go by without much results. Those that do so have been generally more than satisfied with our work, however this mistake people make is understanding that this must be a long-term commitment since there is a branding process involved not only with consumers, but also with search engines, affiliates, shopping portals, web directories, etc. They want to see that youre going to be around for the long haul and that you mean business. As with any form of marketing, major exponential climbs in revenue are seen in spurts and do not begin to occur until after at least 6 months of continuous marketing and branding. Many think that once they start to see a slow and steady climb that the work has been done and discontinue their program rather than step it up. As a result, a small percentage truly capitalizes on the power of web-marketing. It takes a basic understanding of how all types of marketing and branding works in order to understand this, and few possess this knowledge, and fewer are able to effectively communicate this in such a way that it gets the client thinking in terms of the big picture strategy, rather than how much they may be spending at the time. On the flip side of things, the unfortunate thing is that there are a lot of unhappy website owners continuously losing money on empty guarantees made by amateur SEO technicians and web-marketers out there because unqualified companies are simply using the latest buzzwords to manipulate the uneducated. This ultimately gives the business a bad name. I have no doubt however, that the Internet marketing industry will continue to rapidly grow, and that in the end, the truly legitimate web marketers will emerge and leave the rest behind. Should Mom Move Closer?

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Molly Shomer Things to Think About Before You Relocate Your Elderly Parent Your home is now miles and hours away from your parent. The best thing would be to move Mom or Dad closer…or would it? There are a lot of reasons why it might make sense to relocate an aging parent closer to the rest of the family. But, before you suggest a move, give it some serious thought. Be sure that this move would really be the best thing for all of you. Once you have made the commitment to relocate, it will be next to impossible to undo. Following are some important things to think about before you make the decision to relocate an older person: Can my elder get along without me (at least for a while?) If my elderly parent don’t depend on me for regular assistance now, can the move wait until I have had a chance to learn about local elder resources here? If I am working long hours, how much will I be able to assist my parent after the move? Who will select, pack, or sell possessions? Will a house have to be sold? Social Life Is my elder confident enough to venture out and to make new friends in a strange place? Will s/he be leaving a good network of supportive friends? If my aging parent is driving on familiar streets now, will s/he be able and safe to do so on unfamiliar territory, where the traffic may be much heavier? Is transportation available, or will I have to be the chauffeur? Important Medical Questions Does my elder have a long and close relationship with current physicians? Can we find equivalent physicians who will treat an elderly person? Many specialists, in particular, have reduced or closed their Medicare practices. Will health insurance transfer to this area? HMOs are geographically limited. Will the climate be a concern? Financial Issues Is the new cost of living affordable? Social Security and retirement income will not be adjusted if your parent moves to a place with a higher cost of living. If s/he is currently receiving state benefits or assistance, what will the requirements be to qualify in the new location? Even within the same state, there is often a wait before services resume at a new address. If a house must be sold, what are the financial (tax and other) consequences? And this is the most important question of all…What does the elder think? If he is competent and able to make his own decisions, does he want to relocate? Will you spend hours of effort and anxiety trying to find the perfect answer, only to be told to mind your own business? 2002 Molly Shomer, All Rights Reserved. How to Treat Your Liver Right

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

By Rudy Silva The liver has many functions, but the one I will concentrate on is its ability to neutralize toxins we eat. The liver is responsible for making sure that nutrients reach your cells and blood is free of toxins and pathogens. It does this by moving these contaminates out through your 5 channels of elimination - kidneys, lungs, colon, lymphatic system, and skin. Of course, when these 5 channels become toxic, sluggish, or blocked, the liver itself becomes toxic and sluggish. This causes the liver to become inefficient, which leads to an unhealthy body. Sluggish LiverAs the liver loses its ability to detoxify toxins, you will exhibit a variety of symptoms and various illnesses - constipation, high cholesterol, irritable bowel, asthma, skin rashes, high blood sugar, allergies. Other conditions related to a sluggish liver are: * High blood pressure * abdominal bloating * pot belly, weight gain, cellulite * elevated cholesterol * brownish spots on your skin * acne, pimples, eczema * hot flashes, irritability, depression * chronic fatigue syndrome The liver is most affected by the foods we eat. What is especially deadly is eating food products that have “Hydrogenated Oils”, which contain trans-fatty acids. The liver sees trans-fatty acids as a toxin and not as a nutrient. At least 40% of all the fat that you consume or more, if you eat junk food, contains hydrogenated oils : Trans-fatty acids are deadlier than regular animal fat. Trans-fatty acids are associated with heart disease, breast cancer, and diabetes. What a good liver does The more junk food you eat the more you overload your liver. Its ability to process and create the nutrients that you need is hampered. Its ability to process and utilize fat is reduced. If your liver is sluggish and overworked, it will store the fats you eat within its own cells, within the cells of your body and especially around your mid drift. When your liver is working properly, some fats are eliminated through bile and out through fecal matter. If you eat plenty of fiber, this fat is absorbed by the fiber and held there until you have a bowel movement. If you do not eat enough fiber, this fat can be reabsorbed by the colon walls and routed back to the liver to be reprocessed. So now you can see how important is it to reduce, from all sources, the amount of toxins that get into your body and to eat plenty of fiber. Rejuvenating your liver So what will it take to rejuvenate your liver so that it is not sluggish, not toxic, and functions like it should to help you maintain your weight? There are three things that you need to do. These things take a lot of work. You have to be motivated to do them. Getting your liver back to health will takes some time since you need to remove the toxins from your liver slowly otherwise you will have side effects. * Eat liver friendly foods * Cleanse the liver * Strengthen the liver Eat liver friendly foods: Prepare a liquid green drink for your liver first thing in the morning. * squeeze the juice of one lemon into a glass * add one tablespoon of chlorophyll * add one tablespoon of aloe vera drink * add 8 oz of distilled water This drink helps to regenerate the liver. * The lemon helps your liver regenerate and produce bile (healthy bile is necessary for breaking down fat so that fats can be absorbed properly into the liver.) * Chlorophyll helps to detoxify your colon so fewer toxins get into the liver. * The lemon and aloe vera help stimulate bowel movements. The liver needs plenty of minerals. As you know minerals are obtained from fruits and vegetables. Once a day try to drink a vegetable juice. A juice that I enjoy is: * Carrots * Celery * Apples If you can’t make your own juices, buy bottled. It is better to drink these than to not drink any vegetable juices at all. Here are some foods to add to your eating habits. These foods are liver friendly and will help liver to get rid of its toxic condition and regenerate itself. * beets, asparagus, broccoli, * green and red cabbage, brussels sprouts * carrots, squash, okra * collard greens, mustard greens, kale, romaine lettuce, arugula * cauliflower * green beans * peas * tomatoes * spinach * potatoes, yams, avocado * onions, garlic, ginger, bell peppers, olives, radishes * eggs - two a day * flax seed oil - two tablespoons a day * olive oil * apples, grapefruits, oranges, plums, cherries, peach, berries * cranberry juice * sesame seeds, cashews, almonds * pumping, papaya, mangoes * all lettuces except iceberg * brown rice * chicken, fish * all legumes, sprouts of all types * organic soy milk, almond milk, oat milk, rice milk, distilled water * honey, maple syrup Herbs to use as seasonings: * basil, bay leaves, caraway, * rosemary, dill, parsley, thyme * oregano, tarragon, chives, cardamom Add some of these foods, if you are not already eating them, to your eating habits and in next article, I will give you some herbal formulas for teas that you can drink daily for good liver function. Is Your Closet Killing Your Look

Friday, August 17th, 2007

By Lakeysha Green A well organized closet is an excellent foundation for creating impeccable looks for any occasion. Shirts dangling from hangers, shoes cluttering the floor, and jackets bunched together in a closet are perfect if your style is desperately sifting through clothes in the morning and tossing on whatever you can find after giving it a good shake. But if its peace and solace you are after, here are a few basic tips to assist you in creating a wardrobe that will save you time, energy, and keep you looking your best. To create the end result (a well organized closet) it is imperative to start from scratch, so ensure you set aside time to clear the closet of all its contents. Dust off the shelves, and vacuum the floor to clear the closet of any debris. Now its time to organize! Did you ever notice how much time is saved while shopping when you select a blouse you love, and right next to it is a coordinating pencil skirt? Grouping outfits together in the closet will eliminate the hassle of searching for the right garment to pair with another, particularly on mornings when time is scarce. For example, if you have a shirt that looks great with a certain pair of trousers and blazer, group them together. Once the first outfit is complete, put together another outfit and so on. Any left over items should be grouped by garment type (e.g. pants, skirts) then by color for easy reference. Shoes should be stored on a shoe rack/hanger, or in shoes boxes that are either clear, or have a photo on the front of the box for easy identification. Sweaters can be folded and organized on shelves by color. Generally outerwear is the most bulky of items stored the closet. These garments should be grouped together by length, then color at the end of the rail. Accessories All belts should be hung together for quick reference. This can be done by purchasing hooks, using nails, or securing them on a strong hanger. Loose items such as wraps and scarves should be placed on hangers, secured by a clamp, clothes pins, or draped from a hook. Hats are best stored in boxes and placed on shelves. All out of season items can easily be stored in clear, plastic under the bed storage bins. This will help to eliminate excess clutter in the closet. Final Touch: Place a sachet in your closet for a light fragrance thats fresh and inviting. Following the above steps will assist you in creating a wardrobe thats organized and time efficient. It will also help you to visually distinguish between what you need for future purchases, and what you dont. Try it out and see how much easier putting together great looks can be! What Does Brain Science Have To Do With Self Storage Marketing?

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

By Derek Naylor I wish everybody would leave me alone Im sick & tired of everybody trying to get my attention. Today, on the way to a meeting, I heard no less than 100 radio commercials, passed 50 billboards, saw dozens of electronic flashing signs at local retailers, had pop-up banner ads on my computer, 57 e-mail solicitations, received no less than 10 pieces of direct mail, had to ignore ad after ad in the morning newspaper, and endured at least 30 ads on T.V. while watching the evening news. That doesnt even include the telephone call I got from my phone company asking if I wanted to change long distance providers or the text message I got on my cell phone telling me that I can download my favorite ring-tone from their wonderful company. Oh yeah, I have a beautiful wife, 2 great kids and bills to pay. Does this sound familiar to you? Most people have no clue how many people are trying to get their attention until they consciously focus on counting attention grabbers in their daily lives. Most adults have become so callused to marketing and advertising that they completely ignore most of it. Without boring you to death, Id like to briefly explain how this works Our brains have several levels of consciousness. Delta, Theta, Alpha and Beta. Delta is the lowest of our brain wave frequencies and Beta is the fastest. It is commonly believed in the world of brain wave research that we are in all 4 states of consciousness simultaneously. But - and this is the important part - we only observe, or pay attention to one at a time. For the sake of keeping this relevant to marketing your self storage facility, well discuss the highest two frequencies Alpha and Beta. Most of us spend time observing the Alpha and Beta states throughout our lives. It is said that we spend most of our days in the Alpha state of mind. Since it is a lower frequency, Ill call it a conscious sleep. We can function normally in this state and perform most of our daily actions. Think of it like a personal auto-pilot mechanism. Have you ever driven to the office and after you had arrived thought, I dont remember driving to the office today? At a more basic level, we do things like breathe and walk without actively thinking about performing those actions. This is because our brains are trained to do an amazing number of things without conscious thought! What happens when a dog or a child runs out in front of your car when youre in this state? You pay immediate, intense attention to taking a different action than what youre accustomed to. In short, when we are actively focusing on something and thinking, we are observing our Beta frequency. When we are doing things passively, like driving to work and watching television commercials we are allowing our Alpha state to take care of business for us. Knowing that your potential customers are in Alpha most of the time, the challenge becomes snapping them out of Alpha and into Beta so theyll listen to or read your advertisement with full attention. Without doing this, youre message will be likely be heard or seen, but if theyre not paying attention to it, it might as well fall on deaf ears or blind eyes! So the first part of cracking the marketing code is called ATTENTION or INTERRUPT. Getting a persons full attention is done through another part of the brain called the Reticular Activation System (RAS). In our next message, well discuss the second part of the marketing code, which is gaining INTEREST or ENGAGING them into your ad. This is every bit as important as getting their attention in the first place. Because, after youve interrupted them, you only have a few seconds to keep their attention before they move on to their next interruption. Copyright 2006 Derek Naylor Derek M.
